Start of the new Professional Training Yoga Therapy

10. October 2013 from Petra Mayer

Yoga therapy is based on a salutogenetic healing approach that asks, how and by what means can a person evolve towards healthiness. In this approach, the clients are seen as one whole and supported on their path of self-discovery and personal development. The holistic approach incorporates the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level and fosters the natural wisdom of body and soul. The yoga therapist encourages clients to recognize themselves as the most important element and tool in the healing process.

At the same time, the yoga-therapeutic approach targets a wide field of issues and symptoms. Yoga therapy offers a large variety of methods an tools for issues from preventive health care to chronic ailments, to rehabilitation or stress management. A tailored combination of asanas, individualized dietary recommendations, pranayamas and meditation practices form the basis of a yoga-therapeutic treatment that is developed jointly and in an appreciative and resource oriented relationship. Through this therapy, people can deepen their asana-practice, but they can also, for example, alleviate cardiovascular diseases, chronic back pain or rheumatic ailments, or expand their spiritual practice. The crucial element is an appreciative and non-judgmental approach and - apart from teaching technical skills and competences - the strengthening of personal development.

A yoga therapist possesses profound knowledge of yoga in all its aspects, performs a continuous yoga practice him-/herself, and has professional experience in the area of health care [e.g. naturopath, doctor, psychologist, nurse], or he/she is a member in a network of individuals working in health care and medical professions. The interdisciplinary collaboration with a variety of healing approaches is also a central aspect in yoga therapy. Hereby it is crucial to recognize the limitations of a treatment as well as, for example, serious dysfunctions or infectious diseases.

The goal of a therapy with yoga as a medium is to accompany the client into a fulfilled life and to generate an awareness and the experience of their responsibility for their own health and personal development.  In this process, therapist and client are regarded as equal members of a team. The client is the expert for his own path, the therapist's task is, to assist in the strengthening of the client's health, the discovery and development of their potential and achieving their personal goals.

The professional yoga therapy training at 3HO teaches the above mentioned aspects with methods from Kundalini Yoga [asanas, pranayama, meditation and relaxation techniques as well as the mental and spiritual perspectives], through naturopathic procedures, as well as more recent psychologically, resource or solution oriented methods.

The curriculum spans one and a half years and includes almost 400 teaching units in total, divided into three modules.

Module one focuses on the development of consultation expertise and therapeutic communication skills. Central themes of this module are basic therapeutic skills, conversational skills, development of a therapeutic stance and of therapeutic relationships, handling difficult conversational situations, as well as the limitations and opportunities of yoga therapy.

In module two, the knowledge of techniques of Kundalini Yoga will be deepened, to initiate and further holistic healing processes. Different approaches will be taught, so that people with different issues can be supported and accompanied through yoga therapy. In addition, this module will build on and deepen existing knowledge about Asana alignment and effects and the major body systems with a particular focus on how to employ these therapeutically.

How can the rich store of knowledge of Kundalini Yoga support people in times of crisis and change through Pranayama, relaxation techniques and meditation? Specific symptoms like depression, burn-out, stress, addiction will be closely examined and yoga-therapeutic measures for their treatment will be developed and created.
